Younger sister of 2012 Hall of Fame inductee Danny Bearer, Wendy Bearer Bull was the only female member of Larry Stevenson’s original Makaha Skateboard Club in West Los Angeles during the ’60s boom of “sidewalk surfing” then later also a member of the original Hobie Skateboards and Surf team. Started out of Larry’s garage on 26th and Colorado—where he also housed Surf Guide magazine—Makaha would release the first professionally endorsed skateboards in ’63 with Wendy and Danny both part of the elite sponsored team. In ’08 Danny offered, “My sister was the most graceful [on the team] and had a moderation for stability and centering of the Hobie Super Surfer Team.” Since her days with Hobie and Makaha, Wendy has been happily married for 40 years, and in addition to still surfing and skating in her spare time, she enjoys bicycling, backpacking, rope climbing, skiing, softball, camping, snowshoeing, fishing, and photography. She is currently a schoolteacher and has spent the past 20 years living in rural Eastern Oregon raising her two daughters and recently touring the countryside on a Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited touring bike.
